They were first notified of the mysterious man’s body on Boxing Day, when he was found washed up at Eastney East Battery on Southsea Esplanade near Portsmouth.

But despite extensive enquiries and forensic opportunities, the mystery man has still not been named.

Police are now calling on the public for any information and say they will be releasing images today of the area in which he was found and pieces of his clothing to help “jog people’s memory”.

Police Staff Investigation Sam Bird said: “We’ve carried out extensive enquiries in the last three months to identify this man, but lines of enquiry and forensic opportunities have not assisted this process.

“We want to be able to update the man’s family and friends, but need the public’s help to do so.

“Based on his possessions, especially the house key and key ring from a local garage we believe the man could have been a local resident, rather than having travelled here from elsewhere in the country.

“Do you know of a friend or neighbour that hasn’t been seen since Christmas who could be this man?

“We’re releasing images today of the area in which he was found and items of his clothing that could help to jog people’s memory.”

Police were notified at around 6.30pm on Boxing Day to the puzzling discovery and later issued a public appeal for information.

But despite their urgent plea, they were unable to establish the identity of the body.

The man was described as white, of an unknown age with a peculiar gold tooth.

He was wearing blue Levi jeans, a pink woollen scarf, a blue zip Regatta fleece with a Balfour Beatty South East Territory logo, a white and blue striped shirt with a British Rail double arrow logo on the pocket and black Adidas trainers.

He had also been found in possession of an inhaler and an older style video camera.

A force spokesperson previously said: “Officers attended to examine the scene and to allow for the body to be recovered.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and enquiries are underway to identify the man.

“As part of these enquiries we are appealing to the community who may be able to help us identify the man.”

Despite the appeal to the public, police have still not been able to establish the identity of the man.

A spokesperson for the force told The News on Monday that enquiries were still ongoing four weeks after the body was initially found.

Residents expressed their sadness at the discovery, calling it “very sad” and “heart-breaking”.

Police have told anyone who recognises the description of the man or thinks they might know who he is, to call 101 quoting reference 44240560403.
