A woman revealed that her pregnant sister wasn’t speaking with her – after she called her baby name was ‘stupid’.
Taking to Reddit, the poster, believed to be from the US, admitted she and her brother-in-law both warned the quirky moniker may lead to the child ‘being bullied’ in future.
The mother-to-be, who was having a boy, was inspired by her favourite anime character.
Monkey D. Luffy, also known as ‘Straw Hat’ Luffy, is the fictional protagonist in the Japanese manga series One Piece created by Eiichiro Oda.
But family members were quick to shut down the name ‘Luffy’ as silly and urging her to go ‘back to the drawing board’.
She was very upset and started crying, however her sister asked others if she was ‘wrong’ to be honest.
The post from 2023 read: ‘AITA [Am I the A**hole] for telling my sister that her husband is right and her baby name idea is stupid?’
‘I have a twin sister, Sarah [name changed to protect anonymity] is pregnant with her first and due in February, and the baby is going to be a boy,’ it read.

‘Last week she opened up to me and said that she and her husband have been fighting over baby names and she said she’s sick of hearing about it and just wants to settle on a name that they both like.
‘Sarah and her husband are both a bit geeky (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and she told me she wants to name the baby Luffy, as in the character from One Piece. Her husband doesn’t want this name and says the kid will be bullied.’
The woman revealed Sarah asked for her ‘honest opinion’ – but things quickly turned sour.
She added: ‘I suggested that she goes back to the drawing board on that one and maybe look at names of lesser known anime characters if that’s what she wants.
‘Sarah got upset and said the name is cute and we’re both just being closed minded. I told her she asked for my honest opinion and she got it.
‘She kept trying to convince me that it was a good name and the conversation was becoming hysterical and I told her it’s a stupid name, end of discussion.

Taking to Reddit , the woman, believed to be from the US, said she agreed with her twin sisters husband that the baby name she has chosen would probably lead to her child ‘being bullied.’
‘She started crying and left and since then she’s been giving me the cold shoulder. Our parents told me to just tell Sarah that I’m sorry because my words really upset her and I should’ve been nicer about it.’
Many rushed to the comment’s with their own views, with some saying the name was ‘cute’ but only for a pet.
One person said: ‘It’s not cute for either. It’s something you name a pet, not a human.’
Someone else agreed: ‘Yeah, Luffy would be an adorable name for a pet. But not so much for a person.’
Another added: ‘Luffy is cute for a toddler. Not an adult.’
Someone else said: ‘It’s a cute nickname, not a cute legal name.’
A fifth wrote: ‘That’s my cat’s name, because, just like the character, he isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but he makes up for it in loveliness.
‘But it’s a stupid name for a human. My spouse and I are both geeks but we would never burden a child with a fandom name, let them create their own story!’
Meanwhile others agreed that the child would probably get bullied with a name like Luffy.
One person said: ‘You’re brother-in-law is right, the kid will get bullied. NTA’
Another added: ‘NTA, that is a rough name to stick a kid with.’
Someone else wrote: ‘NTA, and who knows what the future of bullying looks like, but there is a word for a person who works on porn films but not on camera that is waaaaaay to close to that name. I would not wish that on an innocent child.’
