Moment hero passersby lift Fiat 500 off injured man trapped under it after being struck by ‘drink-driver’ – before holding suspect until cops arrive

This is the moment a group toppled a battered white Fiat 500 to get to an injured pedestrian underneath – as police arrest a man on suspicion of attempted murder.

Distressing footage posted on social media showed the Fiat 500 with smoke streaming from the hood.

Two men sprinted towards it and wrenched open the doors, dragging a man out of the car and tossing him on the floor.

One of the men sat on him to restrain him, shouting as he did so.

In the video, a woman could be heard screaming ‘there’s someone under the car’.

A heroic group of men passing by then rushed to flip the car, where someone could be seen lying beneath it as shocked witnesses screamed.

Further footage filmed just moments before showed the vehicle reversing out of a road before driving over the pavement, colliding with scaffolding.

It then jerked forward, hitting a man and sending him flying – before driving over him and coming to a halt.

Bedfordshire Police said they were called to reports that a white Fiat 500 had hit pedestrians in Chapel Street, Luton, at about 3.30am.

Two men in their 30s were taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and drink-driving and remains in police custody.

Det Sgt Emma Janes from the force said officers believed the incident was linked to an earlier incident in Kumba Lounge, a nightclub which is on the same road.

She said: ‘We know the area was very busy at the time of the incident and believe there may be others that were struck by the vehicle.
