M1 CLOSED after serious crash as lorry flips onto its side in three-car collision – with queues for miles

PART of the M1 motorway has shut after a lorry reportedly flipped onto its side in a horrific three-vehicle crash.

The southbound carriageway of the busy motorway is closed between Junction 5 for Watford and Junction 1 for Brent Cross.

National Highways said in a statement: “The M1 in Hertfordshire is closed southbound between J5 (Watford) and J1 (Brent Cross) due to a collision.

“All emergency services are in attendance for an overturned lorry.

“National Highways traffic officers are assisting with road closures.”

The road had originally been closed just between Junction 6a and Junction 4, before the closure was later extended.

Traffic data suggests the 15 miles of the major motorway are currently closed.

National Highways had said BCH Road Police, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, and East of England Ambulance Service were all in attendance.

One witness at the scene posted on X: “Seen 8 ambulances, 6 cop cars & 5 fire engines pass on the hard shoulder and now a helicopter in the sky.

“Avoid using the M1 into London. Hope everyone is ok.”

Another driver stuck in traffic told the Watford Observer that people were “walking down the traffic from miles back to have a look at what’s happened.”

In an update this afternoon, National Highways said: “The M1 remains closed southbound between J5 (Watford) and J1 (Brent Cross).

“Traffic caught within the closure is now being allowed past the scene.

“There are minimal delays at present.”
