Are you planning to escape the city for fresh air, long walks and pub lunches over Easter? I recently spent time surrounded by some very stylish countryside folk and here’s what they were all wearing.

1 The boat shoe The last time this humble piece, part old-school preppy, part nerdy cool, was trending it was 2007. Now, however, it’s on everyone’s feet, including the country set. For a designer pick try Bally and Miu Miu, or for a high-street hit check out Penelope Chilvers (see below right), Dune and Russell & Bromley.

2 Field jackets and the Sloane Ranger wax jacket These made a welcome return to the runways last season, and stylish country folk are wearing them with jeans, leggings and over flowy dresses. Toteme, Altuzarra, Massimo Dutti and Cos all have great options.

3 Giant sunglasses 24/7 Even when the country skies were grey, people enjoyed their lunch-time Gavi di Gavi beside fire pits in giant sunnies. This is a win-win: you look sleek and nobody can see your developing wine haze.

4 Trackies with blazers This unusual pairing was championed by editors and influencers during fashion month and now out-of-towners, too. I like wide-leg or cropped trackies – try Alex Eagle, Skims or Lululemon for stylish options – with my favourite blazer, spring knit and backless loafers or, for the evening, heels.

5 Boating style If you’re beside a river, great; if not, no worries, you can do boating-inspired chic anywhere with white denim, baseball caps, wide-striped sweaters and check shirts with the collar worn up. Inspired by next Sunday’s annual Boat Race, WNU’s new collection of blue, pink and green pieces includes shirts, boxers and this Devon jumper I’m pictured wearing.

6 Jewellery and It-bags A country break doesn’t mean leaving your accessories at home. (A bloke in Yorkshire once laughed when I went walking with my Jil Sander bamboo bag but what does he know?) Layer necklaces and pair that favourite bag proudly with your field jacket.

7 The sweater vest No longer the sole preserve of golfers, the sweater vest comes in an array of colours and shapes this season. Wear over a shirt and jeans or tailored trousers for a stylish but relaxed country look.

SPOTTED

Do we believe Gwyneth and Meghan? Is there really a new girlboss romance brewing? Will Gwyneth and Meghan become Montecito BFF after the duchess was spotted in GP’s kitchen eating pie in an attempt to quell feud rumours? My money is on no. Stay tuned!
