Karren Brady gives you career advice

Q: I am due to return to work in May, following nine months of maternity leave.

Before going on leave, I went above and beyond, picking up other people’s slack and correcting their mistakes, despite being the least qualified staff member.

I’d always go the extra mile to ensure the business kept its good name and I’ve worked all my allowed Keeping In Touch days while on mat leave to make sure this is still the case.

Now I’m about to return to my role properly, I’d like to ask for a new job title and a pay increase to reflect how much I do, but I’m worried how to do this without annoying my boss and risking losing my job – which I now need more than ever. Please help!

A) Congratulations on your return to work.

Coming back after having a baby is a big transition, and naturally, it brings a new perspective and sense of responsibility.

It’s clear that you are dedicated and contributing significantly to the company’s success, so it’s important you are recognised for that.

Schedule a meeting with your manager before returning, express how much you’ve enjoyed your role, as well as your commitment to continuing to support the company’s growth.

When discussing a new title and pay increase, confidently explain the value you bring to the team, highlighting the ways in which you’ve gone above and beyond – even on Keeping In Touch days during mat leave.

Approach the conversation professionally, clearly outlining how your role has evolved and the impact you’ve had.

While it’s important to express your worth, remember that the final decision rests with your boss, so try to stay open and understanding.

Good luck!
