Horror moment car ploughs into pedestrians sending man and teenager flying through the air after a row over an Airbnb rental

Horrifying footage has captured the moment a SUV ploughs into pedestrians at speed as they try to flee before being thrown into the air.

The car speeds up in pursuit of the victims and mows into them as it turns right into Malefant Street in Cathays, Cardiff.

The group try to jump out of the way but pedestrians Abdalrhman Ali and Ryan Jones are hit, while their two friends run away up Crwys Road.

Mr Jones suffered injuries to his pelvis and right foot while Mr Ali lost consciousness and suffered injuries to his ribs, chest, abdomen and jaw.

The deliberate attack was orchestrated in response to a row over an Airbnb rental, which saw Mr Ali, Mr Jones and another friend book a weekend in a property via the holiday lettings site.

But when they arrived at the home, they found that Johnathan Newbury, 33, and Elliott Fiteni, 23, were already there.

Newbury was cleared of attempted murder but was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, in connection with the car attack last July.

Due to be sentenced next month, Newbury was also found guilty of attempted GBH and carrying a machete in public.

However, Fiteni was found not guilty of all charges.

By chance, both parties had made a booking at the same address.

When victims Mr Jones and Mr Ali walked up to the building, Newbury and his associate Fiteni were already there.

Newbury began hurling threats at the pair, shouting ‘I’ll f*** you up’ through a window.

Mr Jones and Mr Ali left to drop off a bike at a friend’s house and when they returned to the Airbnb, they spoke to a woman who warned them that Newbury and Fiteni would ‘bonnet’ them.

‘The meaning of this term became clear from what happened,’ prosecutor James Wilson told Cardiff Crown Court.

The injuries sustained by the victims ‘remarkably and luckily were not as catastrophic as they could have been,’ he said.

A black SUV arrived at Bruce Street shortly before 12midnight and contained four or five men inside.

Some of the group got out and were carrying at least one ‘zombie-style’ knife.

CCTV showed men chasing Mr Jones and Mr Ali, who claimed their pursuers were the same men who had shouted abuse at them earlier that night.

The footage captures shouts of: ‘I’m going to f***ing rip these little f***ers up.’

Mr Jones and Mr Ali ran off but minutes later the car was seen speeding up and colliding into them.

Judge Jeremy Jenkins told Newbury: ‘You have been found guilty of serious offences.

‘Before passing sentence upon you I want to find out from a pre sentence report whether I should sentence you as a dangerous offender in the meaning of the Sentencing Act or not.

‘You can expect a substantial period of immediate custody.’

Prosecutor Mr Wilson said Newbury was identified by victim Mr Jones having previously seen him at a hospital, and Fiteni admitted he had been in the car.

The prosecutor said: ‘Against a background of threats and abuse, we submit that he gave chase with dangerous knives and used a heavy vehicle to target pedestrians at obvious risk of deadly serious harm.

‘Mr Newbury was involved in an attack with the intent to kill or at least cause serious injury.’
