Scores of schoolchildren were said to have been left ‘traumatised’ with ‘cuts and bruises’ after a bus crashed into a low bridge in Merseyside this afternoon.
The red double decker bus, operated by private coach firm Happy Al’s, collided with the 13ft bridge shortly before 3pm.
A standard double decker bus typically has a height of between 13 to 14 ft.
Merseyside Police confirmed that the bus was carrying 37 schoolchildren at the time from a local school, all aged between eight and nine, who were returning from a day trip at the time of the crash, Wirral Globe reported.
Emergency services were called to Green Lane at the junction with Old Chester Road in Birkenhead, Wirral, at 2.43pm.
It is understood the road remained closed while recovery work took place.
Dramatic photos from the scene show significant damage to the roof of the bus, which has been entirely ripped off from the vehicle and the front windows smashed.
There were no reported injuries, but social media users have shared that at least some of the children were left with ‘cuts and bruises’ following the collision.

‘Luckily nobody was hurt or killed,’ wrote one. Another said similar incidents of large vehicles getting stuck under the bridge have been ‘happening for years’.
A third said: ‘When will they learn those bridges are too low for buses – hopefully everyone who was on the bus is ok.’
MailOnline has contacted North West Ambulance Service and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service for comment.
