Mother Hubbard’s first shops on Leeds Road, Bradford, will be offering the British classic for the price it was in 1972 to celebrate the occasion.

National operations manager Hassan Sheikh said it’s a way of saying thank you to the people of Bradford who have supported the beloved chippy.

“It’s a way of saying we appreciate anyone who does anything for Mother Hubbard’s and Bradford,” he said.

Owners landed on pricing chips from 1972 as this was when the first Mother’s Hubbard shop was opened on Ingleby Road in Bradford.

The First branch was completed at a cost of £92,000 in 1972 – at that time, fish & chips were served at just 45p per portion.

Hassan added: “I know times are tough, times are hard, we thought let’s do something nobody else can and provide the prices of 50 years ago in 2025.

“From a small, singular chip shop in Bradford to now, 80 sites across the country, especially since our expansion started around Covid times we’ve gone from 10 stores to 80 plus.”

Bosses splashed out on a £150,000 business revamp five years ago – something that proved successful for the chippy chain which is always packed.

The glam new joint on Leeds Road has self-serve screens and a posh interior decorated with newspapers name-dropping the business.

With many more sites on the way, including one in Dubai, it’s clear Mother Hubbard is doing something right.

Hassan described the mouth-watering meal as light and crispy without being heavy or greasy.

The store only uses the “finest” Icelandic haddock and British potatoes” to produce their well-loved menu.

According to the website, it offers a regular fish and chips for £7.45 which you can bump up to a large for an extra pound.

There are also meat and potato pies available, fish cakes, scallops, nuggets – and of course a battered sausage.

It has a 4.3-star rating on Google from nearly 2,000 diners and a slew of positive reviews claiming the restaurant is “outstanding.”

One satisfied customer said: “Some of the best fish and chips I’ve had, highly recommended battered sausage as well.”

Another delighted diner responded: “Mother Hubbard’s is a fantastic place for fish and chips!

“The service is outstanding—friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home.”

A third commented: “The food was amazing and the portion size was very generous for the price.

“Would highly recommend.”

The shop will offer the bargain meal to the first 1,000 customers so if you fancy some cheap chips you’ll have to get there quickly.

Opening time for Mother Hubbard’s Leeds Road tomorrow is 11am and the store will serve its last meal at 10.45pm.
